Insulate Your Roof and Reduce Heating Costs

The cost to heat and cool your home is a big portion of your monthly budget. During the winter months, your heat will rise to the peak of your roof. When your roof is not properly insulated, the heat escapes to the outside. You will have to continuously keep your thermostat high to properly heat your home. During the summer months, a lack of insulation will allow the cool air to escape. You will notice a drastic increase in heating and cooling costs if your roof is not properly insulated or ventilated.

Warm Versus Cold Insulation

Insulation works to keep the temperature at the desired level in your home. Insulation is located in your roof and walls. A lack of insulation allows hot and cool air to escape. It acts as a barrier. There are two types of insulation: warm and cold insulation. Cold insulation is used less often than warm insulation. Warm insulation is placed underneath your roof to keep heat in. Cold insulation is located above your

ceiling on the top floor of your home. Warm roof insulation (known as ฉนวนหลังคา in Thai) is cost-effective and provides various benefits.

The Benefits

As discussed previously, insulation will lower your energy costs. It provides a barrier to prevent heat loss. Nearly 30% of your home’s heat loss is due to poor insulation in your roof. You will save money when you have your roof properly insulated.

Insulation also prevents mould growth. Mould grows in damp and dark environments. Insulation helps to reduce moisture and regulate the temperature. It only takes 24 to 48 hours for mould spores to attach and grow.

Roof Ventilation

A properly placed and working roof ventilation system is equally as important as its insulation. If your roof is properly insulated without ventilation, it can cause heat and moisture buildup. This is a significant issue in both hot and cold climates.

The sun beats down on the roof every day and it retains heat. Your ventilation system allows for heat buildup and moisture to escape. Your roofing system should provide an equilibrium. Too much heat is just as bad as too little heat.

You want to balance your energy costs while allowing your roof to ventilate and breathe. For example, if your roof is not properly ventilated, the moisture and heat buildup will cause the wooden boards to rot. The wooden boards provide a solid foundation for the underlayment and shingles. Rotted wooden boards will lead to leaking.
